What do we do ?
Basic Scenario
The unit represents a small recruiting party, in the year 1775, touring the country to gain recruits for the Regiment currently stationed in America. By the use of drill & firing displays we hope to entice the public into joining King George's Army.
Drill Displays
These are conducted according to the Manual of Arms & are the basic exercises that each soldier was taught prior to joining the Regiment. Carried to the orders of the sergeant the unit demonstrates the basic drill manoeuvres whilst the sergeant explains the reasons why members of the crowd should enlist & learn how to become soldiers.
Firing Displays
This takes the same format as the drill display but has the addition of the soldiers loading & firing to the sergeant's orders using the Short Land Pattern Smoothbore firelock or "Brown Bess".
Informal Lectures
These normally take place in addition to the displays & can cover a wide range of subjects. the normal topics are; the firelock, the soldiers' uniform, the contents of the envelope knapsack or army rations & 18th Century food.
Living History
At many venues it is possible for the unit to erect a living history encampment consisting of a number of tents, both for accommodation & messing, around which the displays take shape. This provides a focal point for the public both before & after the set displays when they can talk to the unit about the period & exactly what it was like for a British soldier in 1775.
